Maker Faire – the greatest Show on Earth finally arrives in Paris! A family-friendly festival of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. And yes, Edgar was there.
This is a short report by our own maker deluxe, .
Weekend, the 21th – 22th of June I had the pleasure to finally visit the (proper, and not just mini) Maker Faire, and met awesome makers. This is the first maker faire in Paris, but the ideal place for it. Paris, the city many of us fall in love with. Again and again. It’s also, as we all know it, a city rich with art history, and also rich tradition in making/crafting itself. I would say that French people are born with passion for making, really. As some of the European countries are only just embracing the craftsmanship, The French have making in their bones. They enjoy learning and love sharing what they do.
Although, we, with didn’t have our own stand, we’ve met almost all the makers who displayed, showed and created their own inventions in Le Centquatre – space for residence, production and performance for artists and audiences from all corners of the globe. The event was organized by LeFabShop, and it’s not a coincidence, that there were all sorts of oddities on display there. Beautiful little (and not so little) things made with 3D printers (even pasta!), robots, origamis, puppets “théâtre mécanique”, wooden furniture and urban gardens, experiments with light & music, even watering system and . They also organized little workshops, let us experiment and introduced us to awesome maker spaces they have in France. They interacted with public in so many ways: all sorts of fruits and objects with MakeyMakey and Arduino, made interactive games, let us play with music cubes, and gave us unusual objects to play with. It was so much fun! For most of them, this was the best way to present their work to the public and to test the concept.
I can say, that all 7600 makers and visitors made this event a huge success; all the makers are really lovely – they took the time and explained their mission, chatted with us about everything, and even let us took lots of , and shoot short . We also got tons of feedback, but the “take away” was clear – they all have awesome products, but lack the time to tell their great story and to send it out in the wild. And this is why Edgar was born, and events such as Maker Faire exist. I’m looking forward to the next Maker Faire Paris. Makers, thanks for being awesome!
